We compared the prices of basic food products in some of the most popular online supermarkets
South Africans are no longer just buying electronics and clothing online – grocery shopping with home delivery has become popular as well. This can be proven by the increasing selection of online supermarkets and their growing reach.
In this article, we check out the buying conditions at major stores where you can buy, among other things, grocery products.
There are two different types of supermarkets which offer home delivery. The first type consists of supermarkets which have traditional, physical stores, but also offer their products in their online counterparts. Those are supermarkets such as Pick n Pay, Woolworths, Shoprite and Checkers.
The second type consists of stores, which offer their products only online.
Let’s take a closer look at the terms of delivery in American supermarkets.
Pick n Pay delivers across all of South Africa. The delivery costs R99, with a minimum order value of R100. Pick n Pay offers free delivery on orders over R500.
Woolworths offers delivery in Eastern Cape, Western Cape and KwaZulu-Natal. Delivery fees start at R60 for local delivery and end at R75 for remort areas. There is no minimum order value. Woolworths does not offer free delivery.
Shoprite delivers in Cape Town and Johannesburg along with its neighbouring areas. Delivery costs R35 with no minimum order value. Shoprite does not offer free delivery.
Checkers will deliver your products to selected locations throughout all of South Africa. Checkers delivery costs R35, with a minimum order of R100. Similarly to the previous two stores, Checkers does not offer any free delivery options.
If you’re planning to make a big order, you might want to consider Pick n Pay, which is the only store that offers free delivery (on orders over R500). However, for smaller orders, it might be better to check out Shoprit, which has the lowest delivery fees and no minimum order value.
While you’re planning your grocery shopping online, it is worth considering using discount codes and cashback. In Picodi you will find discount codes for Pick n Pay, Woolworths, Shoprite and Checkers.
